Sefton Park | Dog Walk

You will have seen in a previous post; that we went to Sefton Park for Wren’s Birthday. We absolutely love Sefton Park so we chose it to not only visit on Wren’s birthday but take my parents on one of their first sign seeing visits of Liverpool that isn’t inner city and Liverpool One. Located in South Liverpool in a district of the same name, it spans 235 acres in size and has been designated by English Heritage a grade I in the register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

History of the park

The site was once within the boundaries of the 2’300 acre Royal deer Park of Toxeth; which became disparate in 1591 and eventually became under the control of the Earl of Sefton. After much controversy on how the land should be used; housing, development, aristocratic mansions it was claimed by the public that the price for the park was extravagant and wasteful. So not long after a competition was launched to design the park. This was won by Edouard Andre a French Landscape Architect and re opened in May 1872 by Prince Arthur who dedicated the park “for the health and enjoyment of the townspeople”.

A major park improvement programme was undertaken in 1983 prior to the International Garden Festival and in 2013 Sefton Park was granted the amazing Green Flag Award for high standards.

Our walk

As mentioned above we really like Sefton Park and even though we have been many times; yet I feel we still have so much to explore. We find ourselves taking new paths each time and always find new things to look at each time.

This time; with the extra hands, we were able to explore the Palm House. Which I’ve been waiting for a while to do. This Victorian Palm House was simply amazing, if you are into your horticulture especially from different corners of the globe. We were able to spot some beautiful flowers even though it was January, the advantage of having a huge green house I guess. A walk round Sefton park is always recommended as it is scenic and beautiful every time. There is even a brilliant cafe which sells hot food, cold food and drinks and even ice creams for all to enjoy!
